Everything We Know About the iPhone 18 Pro Max So Far (2026)

iPhone 18 Release

Imagine you’re standing in line at Apple’s flagship store waiting for a phone that hasn’t even been officially confirmed yet.

Sounds crazy, right? Except it happens every single September, like clockwork, and this year’s lineup might be the wildest one yet. Not only is Apple debuting its first-ever foldable iPhone, the company is also handing the keys to a brand-new CEO for the very first time in over a decade.

Tim Cook is stepping into the role of executive chairman, and John Ternus, Apple’s longtime hardware chief, officially takes over as CEO, just days before the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to take the stage. That’s a new era coming with a new phone.

When Is It Coming?

iPhone 18 pro max release dateThe iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Apple’s first foldable iPhone, widely reported as the “iPhone Ultra,” at Apple’s September 9th event. Since Labor Day falls on September 7 this year, and Apple has never once held an iPhone event the day right after that holiday. Pre-orders are expected to open Friday, September 11, with phones hitting shelves September 18.

This is a genuinely unusual year for Apple’s release calendar overall. The standard iPhone 18 and a new budget iPhone 18e, along with a second-generation iPhone Air, aren’t launching in September at all. Apple is splitting its lineup for the first time, holding the more affordable models back until spring 2027. So this September belongs entirely to the Pro Max, the Pro, and the foldable.

How Much Will The iPhone 18 Cost?

Expect the iPhone 18 Pro Max to cost $100 to $200 more than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, driven by rising memory chip costs and pricier camera components across the industry.

That would put the iPhone 18 Pro Max starting somewhere in the $1,299 to $1,399 range, up from the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s $1,199. However, nothing is locked in until Apple confirms it on stage.

Design Changes

Don’t expect a major redesign, Apple tends to save those for every few generations. But there are some real refinements rumored:

A Dynamic Island that’s noticeably smaller, made possible by moving some Face ID components underneath the display

A more unified rear design, with updated backplate glass and processing meant to minimize the color difference between the aluminum frame and glass, eliminating the two-tone look some found polarizing on the iPhone 17 Pro

A thicker, heavier build specifically on the Pro Max, likely to accommodate the larger battery

Chip and Performance

iPhone 18 processorThe iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to run Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, the first iPhone chip built on TSMC’s 2nm process. Early estimates suggest it could be up to 15% faster than the A19 Pro while using around 30% less power, translating to a phone that runs cooler and lasts longer on a charge without you noticing any huge difference in everyday use. Reports also point to Apple’s new C2 modem, aiming to reduce reliance on Qualcomm, along with continued satellite connectivity for messaging and emergency use in areas without cell coverage.

Camera Upgrades

Both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to get a variable aperture main camera, a mechanism that will physically adjust how much light hits the sensor, similar to a professional camera lens, for better control over lighting and background blur. There’s ongoing chatter that this feature could end up exclusive to the Pro Max, but as of the most recent reporting, that’s still unconfirmed either way. There’s also talk of a wider aperture telephoto lens for sharper zoom shots in low light. Expect the usual triple-camera setup otherwise, with a 48MP main, 48MP ultrawide, and 48MP periscope telephoto lens for 4x optical zoom.

Battery Life

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to get close to a 10% larger battery than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, potentially landing around 5,100mAh. Combined with the more efficient 2nm chip, that could add up to meaningfully better real-world battery life.

Display

Don’t expect a size change here. The 6.9-inch, 120Hz display is expected to carry over  from the 17 Pro Max, though a new LTPO+ panel could allow for lower power draw.

Colors

Rumors consistently point to Dark Cherry as the new signature color, described as a deep red with a slight purple tinge, replacing last year’s Cosmic Orange. Light blue, dark gray, and silver are also expected to round out the lineup.

What’s Still Unclear: Rumors to Watch

The Camera Control button’s fate is one of the murkier threads, with rumors ranging from a simplified version to it disappearing from the lineup entirely. Whether the variable aperture camera stays exclusive to the Pro Max is still unresolved. And the exact final pricing won’t be locked in until Apple actually takes the stage.

Bottom line

Apple already raised its own trade-in values by up to 30% ahead of the keynote. That alone tells you resale demand is heating up, and it will only climb higher once the iPhone 18 Pro Max actually hits the stage.

Here’s the part most people miss: once the new phone is official, older models don’t hold their value forever. Prices tend to slide fast as attention shifts to whatever’s newest. If you’re planning to upgrade this fall, the smarter move is locking in your current phone’s value now, before the announcement changes the market.
