Ever wondered what happens when you sell your phone online to a buyback company?
Well, in this article I’ll put an answer to those questions and tell you what exactly happens behind the scenes when you sell your phone to us at The Whiz Cells.
I’ll break it all down from quote to payment.
So without further ado, let’s get right to it.
Why We Built the Process This Way
Before we dive in, here’s a quick backstory from our founder on why we built the process this way:
“Before I started The Whiz Cells I used to sell in person locally. One time in 2009, I was held up by 3 guys. It was very scary. I lost my beloved iPhone 3G but luckily that was all I lost.”
So the goal was to build a process that was smooth, actually paid good value for devices, transparent, safe and above all one that sellers could trust; the internet can be a scary, scam-filled place after all. Effectively eliminating the need for anyone to put themselves in unsafe, unpredictable situations.
Submitting Your Order & Getting Started
This part is pretty simple, so we’re going to keep it short.
Once an order is submitted, almost immediately a shipping label and QR code is emailed, which you can print or scan the QR code at the post office for them to print it.
From there, all that’s left is to package your device safely. Remember to fill up empty space in your package to avoid the device moving around, shifting during transit, or getting damaged while being shipped.
After We Receive Your Phone
Step 1: How Your Phone Is Evaluated (No Guesswork)
Once your device arrives at our facility, it is typically checked in by the next business day. Then that’s where The Whiz Cells magic (aka device testing) begins.
At The Whiz Cells we use a standardized testing system, that’s all done by computer to eliminate human error. First, for functional testing, our diagnostic software scans the device’s components to ensure all parts of the device are checked. Then our AI-powered system scans the device’s cosmetic condition and assigns a grade, keeping the same standards across every device we process.
The result? Every phone is graded fairly and consistently, with no guesswork and no subjective judgment; just accurate results you can trust, every single time. That means the value you’re offered is based purely on your device’s real condition, giving you confidence that you’re getting a fair outcome every time.
Step 2: Data Privacy; What Happens to Your Personal Information
Sellers are always advised to sign out of accounts and wipe their device before shipping. It is part of what we cover in our extensive guide to properly preparing your phone for sale.
Now, in the case that someone ships their phone without wiping it, we factory reset every device. To be clear, even if the device has been wiped when we received it, after testing the software we use wipes the device again.
That said, wiping your device yourself before shipping remains the best way to safeguard your data.
Step 3: Price Confirmation & What Can Change an Offer
At this stage, things usually go one of two ways after the device is assessed and graded:
- The device’s condition matches the details originally submitted, and payment is immediately issued through the seller’s selected method. Which is what happens most of the time.
- The device’s condition doesn’t match the seller’s submission, then a new offer is sent based on the device’s actual condition (with a clear explanation), which the seller can accept and receive payment or decline and have the device shipped back at no cost.
What typically changes an offer;
- More cosmetic damage than stated
- Functional issues (speaker, mic, etc.)
- Incorrect device sent; Yes it happens!
Step 4: Payment Timeline; When You Get Paid
So how long does it take for the device to go from checked in to payment sent?
In the case that the device matches the condition submitted by the seller, the whole process from us receiving the device to payment processing typically takes 1 business day.
At the end of the sale, we want our seller to be satisfied with the smooth process and feel that they received good value from our service.
Once payment is sent, your phone’s journey isn’t over yet
What Happens to Your Phone After It’s Sold
After we buy your device, here’s what usually happens:
- Devices in good condition may be refurbished; screens, frames, batteries, cameras, you name it.
- Devices that can’t be fully refurbished are used for parts to repair other phones.
- Devices that are beyond repair are recycled into raw materials, processed in an environmentally friendly way.
We care about the environment just as much as we care about giving our sellers a smooth, fair experience. Your old phone gets a second life, and nothing goes to waste if it doesn’t have to.
Seller Checklist: What You Need Before Shipping
Before you send your phone, having these things ready will make the process smoother and faster:
- iCloud / Google account signed out – prevents any account lock issues.
- Find My iPhone / Find My Device turned off – so the device can be tested and processed.
- Factory reset completed
- SIM card removed – keeps your personal info safe.
Having these ready before shipping means your device can move through testing and payment without delays.
Final Reassurance: Selling Without Stress
At The Whiz Cells, our promise to every seller is simple:
- Smooth process – from quote to payment, no surprises.
- Fair value – you get paid for your device’s real condition.
- Safe environment – no meeting strangers, no scams, no stress.
Selling online doesn’t have to be risky. Transparency is how we earn trust, never through pressure.
